A Toast to Maureen

Today my friend Maureen Crawford received her Master of Arts in Communications and Technology from the University of Alberta. I has the honour of toasting Maureen at her graduation celebration this evening. Here is what I said.

I’d like to propose a toast to my friend Maureen on the completion of her Master of Arts in Communications and Technology.

In addition to her studies over the last 2 ½ years Maureen worked on the Leadership Development team at Edmonton Public Schools, was a supportive friend, mother, wife, sister, and daughter, was on the executive committee for the first (and second) TEDxYouth@Edmonton events, and was a mentor for the Centre for Global Education.

Maureen didn’t just research PLNs (personal learning networks) and the role they could play in developing leadership competencies, she role modelled it, developing her own PLN and “pulling mental taffy with scholars from around the world” as she puts it. Her first peer reviewed publication, an article about Massive Open Online Courses in Education Media International this June, was co-authored with scholars from Canada, Egypt and the United States.

I’d like to highlight Maureen’s awards:

  • Two Queen Elizabeth the Second Graduate Studies Scholarships;
  • Funding from the Ministry of Innovation and Advanced Education;
  • Two Leadership Development Bursaries from the Banff Centre for the Arts;
  • and Membership in the Golden Key International Honours Society.

And her new position as Edmonton Public Schools Consultant for Research and Innovation for Student Learning.

To Maureen! Congratulations!
